Team Nanshy had a very busy and hugely enjoyable time at the International Make-up Artist Trade Show this past weekend. This was our first time exhibiting at the show and it could not have been more exciting!

Our own celebrity make-up artist and Nanshy ambassador Barrie Griffith together with beauty brand expert Nikki Taylor were delighted to speak to so many of you make-up addicts, fans, professional make-up artists and students.

Barrie and Nikki showed off our range of cruelty-free must-haves including brushes, brush holders, brush belts and our 4-in-1 blending sponge.

With so much make-up product and incredible make-up artistry everywhere we looked it was hard for all us all not to get distracted. Nikki even had a close call with a monster or two!

One of Barrie’s personal highlights was speaking to award-winning make-up artist Lan Nguyen- Grealis about her new book and her love of Nanshy brushes.

We were all delighted when Emmy-award winning make-up artist and the founder of IMATS Michael Key stopped by our booth for a chat!

In recognition of the strong relationship between these two, world class event The Clothes Show has expanded its reach to include a greater range of suppliers and products for your pleasure.

We can’t wait to get to The Clothes Show and meet our fabulous fans, so do come along and say ‘hello’, whichever day you’re planning to come.

What is The Clothes Show?

If you love fashion, you’ll almost certainly have heard of The Clothes Show. Held annually at the NEC in Birmingham, this is the UK’s leading event for everything about clothes, fashion and style. Presented by celebrities and featuring live performances form some of the UK’s most exciting musical talent, it’s one event that has a firm spot in the diary of every fashionista in the country.

Launched in 1989 on the back of the popular TV show of the same name, the event attracts over 150,000 visitors every single year. Established model agencies often use the show as a hunting ground for new talent, and famous faces such as Cat Deeley and Holly Willoughby have been plucked from the crowd in the past.

This year, The Clothes Show has secured sponsorship from tech giant Alcatel OneTouch, and is promising to be bigger and better than ever. Leading the line-up for 2015 are four gorgeous British models, Erika Pattison, Sarah-Ann Macklin, Hannah Dodd and Rhiannon Laslett, collectively known as the ‘Brit Pack’, and who were all scouted at the show over the last decade by Select Model Management.

What happened to the ‘live’?

In line with the significant improvements, investments and changes to the old ‘Clothes Show Live’ format, the event has rebranded itself as ‘The Clothes Show’ for the event in December 2015. The overhaul is not just in the name either, and avid fashion fans can expect an altogether better event this year.

The layout has been improved to give a better flow throughout the event, and there are new and innovative features built in which will enhance your catwalk, shopping and seminar experience. In light of the strong links between fashion and beauty, you can now find more of your favourite brands here at the event for 2015.

Over 500 high street, boutique and designer brands will be housed in newly curated sections, helping you find your favourites and discover new products more easily.

What beauty trends can we expect in Spring 2016?

Every design house has its own take on where fashion and beauty looks are headed.

But there is one standout prediction and that is the use of striking red lipstick which was seen at all the major shows and is favoured by DKNY, Celine, Nina Ricci, Oscar De La Renta, Topshop Unique, Giles, Acne, Victoria Beckham and Dolce & Gabbana.

Candy Apple and Snow White Apple Red are the recommended colours by Harpers Bazaar. Mind you, at New York fashion week both Oscar de La Renta and Victoria Beckham sent out their models with half and half – half with striking red lips and half with nude tones. So you can take your pick according to your mood as there is a choice on the horizon.

Red needs to be applied with complete precision, there is nothing forgiving about this colour. As with all the looks of the season, they can all be achieved to a professional level with Nanshy lip brushes.
Other looks that are prominent runners for Spring 2016 are:

  • Emanuel Ungaro has shown us that faux freckles is a look to think about.
  • Louis Vuitton favours an exaggerated lash look.
  • Chloe favours applying black liner around the eye with a natural hair texture.
  • Balmain favours makeup that is pared-back but featuring strong brows and contouring.
  • The Dolce&Gabbana look leans towards luminous skin, soft feline eyes and plump lips – that are in striking red!
  • Prada has really gone out by delivering Gold lips for the Spring 2016 season. One to watch.
  • Moschino played with feline flicks of liquid liner and soft brown lips.
  • Isabel Marant gave us a bare-faced with radiant complexion that is pro cleansed before applying oils for a balmy glow.

Finally, the eye colour used by almost everyone was blue – a colour to keep in mind for 2016.

Happy New Year!

Valentine’s Day make-up ideas

2018: 6 Celebrity-Inspired Valentine’s Day Makeup Looks

Valentine’s Day, a perfect time where you can spend thinking of new ways to do your make-up.   The great thing about rediscovering make-up specifically for Valentine’s Day is that you will be looking for a natural and flawless look which can be adapted and used all year round.

Valentines make-up has no rules, however there some inspirational looks which can be taken from some sources such as romantic movies like The Notebook.  If you want to get some initial inspiration this is a great place to begin.  There are also of course handy tips right here on the Nanshy blog which you can read and use.  See these tips outlined below which are perfect to try this Valentine ’s Day.

Extra sparkle to your smoky eye

You may be used to having the smoky eye for your favourite evening look and for Valentine’s Day you can give this look an extra sparkle.  Eye shadows which contain a natural shimmer are great to add an extra vivacity to your eye make-up.  When creating your regular smoky eye, it is a good idea to use three shades close to each other and build them up.  When adding shimmer you can replace one or two of those layers with a shimmer or a glittery eye shadow.  By layering a shimmery or glittery eye shadow, next to a none shimmer or glittery eye shadow will give the most striking effect.  Natural eye shadow colours close to your skin tone are also a great look in replace of darker smoky colours for Valentine’s Day.

Skin

For Valentine’s Day you want to look natural, however you still want your skin to look flawless and have some colour.  If you have pretty flawless skin, a tinted moisturiser will give the most natural effect.   Mineral foundation is also fairly light in coverage and is also good if you want a matt finish to your make-up.  If perhaps you wear a heavier make-up and want to tone it down for Valentine’s Day, why not just use a little less foundation than you normally do? To achieve that flawless look for those who maybe prone to breakouts for example, it is good idea a higher coverage is needed but perhaps use a little subtle blush instead to keep it natural.  If you are using a high coverage foundation make sure you blend in well to achieve that natural look.  By investing in some kabuki foundation brushes such as the range produced by Nanshy you can get that airbrushed look with ease.

Use blusher as a flush rather than to define

Blusher is a great way to bring colour to your make-up, and it can also help with contouring.  You may be so used to applying blusher in a particular way; you may not realize the possibilities of application.  Blusher is most commonly applied to the apples of the cheeks to add colour and define them.  However, for that natural, yet pretty Valentine’s Day make-up, you could perhaps use the blusher to create a “flushed” look.  This is where the blusher is not applied in a very controlled way, but is generously applied to the apple of the cheeks and a little beyond this area.  The idea is to put pink in areas of the cheeks which are naturally prone to turning pink for a more natural finish.

They  key to this look is making sure the blusher is well blended in so the finish looks as natural as possible.  The flat top buffer foundation brush by Nanshy is a wonderful kabuki brush which is ideal for blending in the blusher to your base foundation without streaks.

Smudge free lips

You may think red lipstick is the most typical colour used for lips on Valentine’s Day.  However, natural lip colours are also very flattering for that romantic date.  If you want to make sure that your lips say mess free on your romantic evening then it may be an idea to leave that red lipstick at home.  Ideal alternatives include lip stains and tints which will stay firmly in place all night.  If you want a very minimal look, lip balm is another option.  If you do use a minimal lip look then be sure to play up your eyes.

Long but natural looking lashes

Aiming for a natural, pretty, yet striking look on Valentine’s Day is a good way to approach your make-up.  One way to enhance your eyes is by using artificial lashes.  Strip lashes will enhance your lashes all the way across, and individual lashes you can be more selective.   For Valentine’s Day it may be an idea to apply 3-4 individual lashes to the outer corner of your eyes to keep the look natural and pretty.

A soft spring make-up look

A soft spring make-up lookWoman portrait with flowers

This soft spring time look will give you the chance to try out soft pastels which are both subtle and elegant.  With a spring time look you can really express and experiment with outbursts of colour such as yellows, greens, lilacs and pinks.  Shimmers and matts will work for this look when choosing your eye shadow pallets.  Here at Nanshy we have a spring time look which you can try out for yourself.  Just follow this guide below.

Eye make-up remover – The first step is to remove your eye make-up with an eye make-up remover.  Even if you are not wearing any make-up, your eyelids build up on oil throughout the night.  This oil can make it difficult to apply powdered eye shadows, so it’s always a good idea to wipe them over with some eye make-up remover on a cotton disk.  The skin around the eye area is very delicate and an oil free eye make-up remover will not be too heavy on this skin.

Cleanse – Using a cleanser will prepare the skin by removing any dirt and debris from the surface of the skin.  You can use cleanser which is suitable for your skin type, be it an oily, dry or combination skin to help restore the balance in the skin.

Tone – Toning the skin will remove any remaining skin products and debris from the skin.  Toner also acts as an astringent and so will close any pores up in the skin.

Moisturiser – Using a moisturiser before you apply your make-up will leave give your skin a good surface to begin applying make-up to.  Apply a moisturiser to the face and the neck and leave it to soak into the skin.  You can find a specific moisturiser to suit your skin type.

Foundation – For this spring time look apply a foundation which is slightly radiant instead of using a matt foundation to give the skin a fresh and dewy look to it.  Foundations can be applied with a sponge, your fingers or with foundation brushes.  Using the range of Kabuki foundation brushes produced by Nanshy will give you a flawless and airbrushed finish.  Apply with the Nanshy flat angled buffer brush to spread your foundation over the skin.  After this, use the round buffer brush to smooth over the base to give an extra polished and perfect base.

Concealer – Use a concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone to cover up any discolorations and under eye circles with a concealer brush.  Smooth out any concealer lines using the Nanshy pointed foundation brush.

Powder – Once you have applied your foundation and concealer, use a powder to set the make-up.  Apply using a powder brush or powder puff.

Blusher – For a soft spring time look you want the colour applied in your make-up to look soft and elegant.  For the cheeks, apply a soft pearly or dewy cream blusher in a pale pink to your cheeks with your fingers.  Once you have done this, use the Nanshy flat top buffer brush to blend in the look.  You are aiming to get a well-blended and seamless finish between your foundation and the blusher.

Eye shadow – Soft pastel colours are used in this make-up look.  First, apply a soft matt white eyes shadow to the eyelid up to the eyebrows.  Once you have done this line the socket from the inner corner to the middle with one colour, then the middle to the outer corner with another using an eye shadow brush.  For this look use a yellow on the inner corner, and a green on the outer corner.  You can then apply a second colour, a shade darker than the first green used and use it on the very outer corner of the eyes to add in some depth and blend well.  Once you have done this gently line under the lower lashes in a green and blend in well.

Eyeliner – For this spring look, it is better to use eyeliner which has soft lines.  Harsh eyeliners may make this look appear too harsh for this spring time look.  Instead opt for using an eye shadow as an eyeliner and blend well.  To apply slightly wet an eyeliner brush with water, and use a black eyeliner colour on the upper lashes, and a little on the outer corner of the lower lashes.

Mascara – Apply black mascara to the eyelashes on both the upper and lower lids.  If you like curling your eyelashes use an eyelash curler before you apply the mascara.

Eyebrows – Eyebrows always frame the face, and even with this soft spring look it is important to add definition to the eyebrows.  Use an eyebrow powder or an eye shadow matching your eyebrow colour with an angled brush.

Lip liner – Lip liner can add definition to your lips, and it can also help your lip make-up last longer.  Apply a lip liner in a soft pink.

Lipstick – Apply a lipstick the same colour as your lip liner with a lip brush.  To make the lipstick last longer, once you have applied a layer of lipstick, blot with a tissue then reapply again.

Lip-gloss – Apply a high gloss lip-gloss to the lips with a lip brush to add a shine to the lips.
